Video games get blamed as the villain in most of these conversations, but that's not the whole picture. A game can help a stressed-out kid by giving his mind somewhere else to go. The focus a game demands crowds out the looping, anxious thoughts that show up when a teenager sits still with nothing to do. That's part of why taking the game away rarely calms things down. You're removing the one tool he's found that quiets his own head, not just a distraction.

A Pomodoro timer works well here: a short, focused work sprint followed by a real break, so the payoff shows up on a schedule his brain can feel.
- Build reward into the work itself, not just the reward at the end. Short breaks between study sprints, a snack after each finished assignment, or simply a set stopping point all give his brain something to work toward besides the next grade. Pair that with a firm limit on how long he sits and games afterward, so the reward for finishing homework doesn't quietly turn into three more hours on the console.
- Ask what he's good at in the game, specifically. Strategy, quick decisions under pressure, memorizing patterns, leading a team. Those are real skills. Naming them out loud changes the conversation from "you waste too much time gaming" to "here's what you're capable of."
- Get curious before you get strict. "What does school feel like for you right now?" opens a door that "turn it off and do your homework" closes.
